Dracula: A True Classic

Dracula text

For the longest time I just stopped reading. Blame it on adolescence or general life but I think I just forgot how to be patient enough to read a book. I don't think I lost my love of reading I just used the excuse of not having the time to do it....and yes I admit it was an excuse.

Since having a lot more spare time on my hands I have found daytime tv extremely tedious so started looking for other ways to play out my time. After cleaning the house from top to bottom about ten times I stood in front of my limited amount of books and was drawn to my copy of Dracula by Bram Stoker. Now of course being bright lime green helped me notice it but I also fancied diving back into a classic.. well if you are going to do something, go all in right?

I honestly struggled to concentrate on it when I first started. To sit there and really read each word and build up the imagery in my mind was like a skill I had forgotten to keep trained up. This feels silly to try and explain but I had to make myself sit and really think about the story itself and appreciate the language used to describe the world of Dracula.

After three hours of getting lost in this world I couldn't put it down and now have my passion for reading reignited.

Dracula Book

I was horrified to learn when researching Bram Stoker today that most girls who adore modern vampires, you know those Twilight things, had never actually read Dracula or even understood that they weren't the first of their kind. As a adult who remembers being given this book before I'd even heard of Buffy the Vampire Slayer (which I completely adored) I was just in shock at thinking that these people have missed out on such a classic invention and worse still that they are tainted to what a vampire was meant to be. *sorry mini rant over!*

Dracula Classic

So back to the book - I think I have fallen back in love with books generally. Now go with me here.. I know you can get books online etc but I love holding a book and turn the pages. Sounds odd but I think for me it's part of the pleasure of reading. I also think since starting this little blog I have developed a real adoration of the written word so the idea of having a classic like Dracula and not be able to hold it doesn't sit well with me. By no means as I saying reading online or on a kindle etc is wrong but it's just not for me. I'm a great believer in reading how you feel comfortable and this is just what suits me best.

So now I have finished this beauty of a book I have begun my next one in Frankenstein (I do love horror so that maybe why my books have a theme.)
Take what you want from this post but if nothing else I hope it makes you remember a book you really loved reading and temps you to give it another look!
